Body - Problems with Sleeping

As we get older, we often begin to find that the quality of our sleep is no longer as good as it used to be. There are various causes for this, some of which are:

  • not having enough time for sleep,

  • the resurgence of bad memories we cannot forget,

  • unhappiness caused by the feeling that we never lived the life or achieved the things we had once hoped for, and perhaps worst of all,

  • chronic or recurring pain from age related ailments.

Doctors or friends may suggest sleeping pills, pain pills, vitamin pills, or other remedies. Some alternative aids to sleeping well practiced by the Chinese include:

  • soaking your feet in warm water for 10 minutes or so before bedtime,

  • bathing in a nice hot tub to warm up and relax the body,

  • walking for 30 to 45 minutes every day to relax the mind,

  • abstaining from food close to bedtime, and

  • drinking a glass of wine to relax you and promote better sleep.

There are many things you can do to improve your sleep. It is also important to be aware of how your body responds to your various daily habits, your thoughts, and your state of health. Try to avoid anything that agitates or excites you too much in the hours before bedtime. For example, the last thing you want to do is watch an exciting drama or thriller on TV just before going to bed.

Everyone is different and these are only some proven general recommendations. If you come to me for a personal evaluation, I'll be happy to give you a list of suggestions specifically tailored to your own needs.
